Your bathroom shelf: take stock before your next purchase
Before adding another product to your basket, look at what you already have. You do not need a prescribed number of products. The question is simple: do I know what is on my shelf and why I chose it?
Check the name and intended use
Choose just one shelf or drawer. Read each item's name and packaging information. If you cannot remember what it is for, do not guess from its colour, scent or a social media category name. Return to the manufacturer's instructions.
Try three groups: I know what this is and use it; I know what this is but do not use it; I need more information. A group is not a judgement of the product's quality or your care for yourself.
Write questions, not assumptions
For an unfamiliar item, note a specific question. Where is it intended to be used? What method does the manufacturer describe? Where are the storage and shelf-life details? If packaging or instructions are missing, contact the seller or manufacturer.
This article sets no universal expiry period or way to use cosmetics. Follow each product's own labelling and verified instructions. Similar packaging does not mean the same intended use.
Name what you actually want to buy
Before shopping, finish the sentence: “I am looking for a product for…” If you cannot, perhaps you just want to browse. That is fine. Browsing does not have to become an order.
If you can name a specific need, compare it with what you already own. Consider intended use, instructions, price and your preferences. An Instagram list of recommended products need not be your personal shopping list.
Keep a simple list
It might look like this:
- What do I already have and want to keep using as directed?
- Which intended uses or label details do I need to check?
- What am I actually missing?
- What do I only want to look at, without buying today?
You do not need to record everything. Include the items you are deciding about. This editorial suggestion is about taking stock, not achieving a perfectly empty bathroom.
Your next purchase can wait for an answer
If a key detail is unclear, take time to check it. Current descriptions are available with products in the AboutHer store. A beautiful post need not hurry your decision.
Source and editorial approach
